This is a big leap for a lot of people to make, because we’re taught by society, by our schools, by our friends, and by our culture that certain stories and conclusions about life have an objective reality to them. But the truth is that sometimes parents are unkind, and sometimes children are unkind. Sometimes your friends are not kind to you, and I’m sure there have been times when you’ve not been kind to your friends. You may have experienced some very real suffering, but when we add on top of that what we believe should or shouldn’t be, that mental position literally locks the painful emotion into our systems. So even though this is a very difficult thing for people to see because it’s so contrary to the way we think, it’s absolutely necessary if we’re really going to end suffering.
